In celebration of Earth Day, Annette Starbuck, winner of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” Season Three and owner of “Goodie Girls” will host Planet Rehab’s “The Butterfly Experience” on April 22, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Planet Rehab Sanctuary located at 2745 W. Dalepark Dr., San Dimas, CA 91773. AB Weddings & Special Events will help plan this premiere event to benefit The Butterfly Experience. This event will mark the opening of the new Butterfly Habitat, which offers its visitors total immersion as they enter into an enclosed exhibit beautifully landscaped with native plants and populated by hundreds of butterflies.

As a result of pollution, global warming and loss of habitat, the world butterfly population is in an ominous decline. Many butterfly species are on the verge of becoming, or have already become, extinct. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently designated 23 more species in the country as endangered or threatened. By opening up the walk-in Butterfly Habitat and encouraging the public to interact with these amazing creatures, Planet Rehab hopes to encourage the public to take part in helping Butterfly Populations to survive.

Event Details:
On April 22, 2012, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and wonder of butterflies, up close and in person. Planet Rehab Director Gary Mitchell, and Carlo Rios, Planet Rehab’s Ambassador will co-host this event. The Butterfly Experience will begin at 1:00 P.M. and end at 5:00 P.M. Renowned Butterfly Landscape Expert David Snow will speak on what types of plants butterflies need in order to reproduce and each attendee will be given a pot with a Milkweed seed planted in it. (Milkweed is the only plant that Monarch Caterpillars can eat).

More than just a pretty face, butterflies help to pollinate many of the fruits and vegetables that we eat. Planet Rehab’s Butterfly Experience illustrates the importance of planting native plants to keep our local butterfly populations healthy. Planet Rehab operates on the premise that it is the simple things in our world, which make the biggest differences, and so much of what is taken for granted. The Butterfly Experience offers a chance to help make a difference and celebrate Earth Day!

Scott L. Schwartz joined Happy Hats for Kids and helped crown every child at Shriners Hospital for Children with a whimsical Christmas Happy Hat. Most fans don’t know this “Ultimate Nice Guy” has actually been visiting children’s hospitals (CHOC, Shriners, etc…) worldwide for the past 12 years after losing his sister to lung cancer in 1998. Since 1970, American Childhood Cancer Organization has been respected as an essential and integral provider of programs and services required by families of children and adolescents with cancer across this country. Together with our local affiliates who provide the direct support with families, we address the critical needs that families face today. As a grassroots leader in the childhood cancer community, it is our responsibility to speak for the needs of the families and survivors. Doing so, we help shape policy, research, and programs on the national level that affect the lives of families today and tomorrow. The board and staff of ACCO are committed to serving our community until the day when no child dies or is left with life long effects from this devastating disease.

American Childhood Cancer Organization’s mission is to address the needs of families through programs that emphasize information, advocacy, awareness, and research. Our organization was founded by a talented and committed group of parents, and we have placed a priority on ensuring that those making policy decisions today understand what a family goes through when their child has been diagnosed with cancer. Over two thirds of our organization board and staff are either survivors or a family member of a child or adolescent who had cancer. The recent Childhood Cancer Survivor Study has documented that 2/3 of survivors deal with long term late effects from its toxic treatment, 1/3 of which are moderate to severe. We strongly believe that families need accurate information, advocacy, and support from the first day of diagnosis through the rest of the child s life. The staff and board of American Childhood Cancer Organization are committed to meeting the needs of these survivors and their families.

Who We Are

American Childhood Cancer Organization ( ACCO ) began in 1970 by a group of parents whose children had been diagnosed with cancer. They came together to lobby for more research, and to support each other through the diagnosis and treatment of this life threatening disease at a time when very few children survived. Today, ACCO is one of the largest grassroots, national organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children and adolescents with cancer and their families. We are strong advocates for our families in Washington D.C., we produce the highest quality materials on childhood cancer, and we have over 40 local affiliate organizations across the country providing direct services to the families in their communities.
